Uniting for Safer Streets: World Day of Remembrance Event Highlights Advocacy and Awareness
Road traffic crash victims, their families, and advocates came together outside The George Washington University Hospital for a walk to the Lincoln Memorial in honor of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. The event, organized by D.C.’s Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments and D.C. Families For Safe Streets, aimed to bring the community together and raise awareness about the importance of safe streets. Organizer Jessica Hart, who lost her daughter Allie in a traffic crash, emphasized the need for solidarity among those affected by such tragedies.
During the event, crash survivor Julie Henning shared her harrowing experience of being hit by a garbage truck while riding her bike in 2020. She highlighted the lasting physical, mental, and emotional impact of the crash, underscoring the ripple effect on families and friends of victims. Similarly, Jonathan Ward attended the walk to honor his sister and friend who lost their lives in traffic accidents, emphasizing the importance of connecting with like-minded individuals to advocate for safer streets.
The event also shed light on legislative efforts to improve road safety, such as increasing car insurance minimums in the District to help crash victims cover medical expenses. Organizers praised initiatives like the Strengthening Traffic Enforcement, Education and Responsibility Amendment Act of 2023, which aims to hold individuals accountable for unpaid traffic tickets that contribute to unsafe road conditions. Participants stressed the importance of raising awareness and promoting responsible driving to prevent future tragedies.
