CBP's 'Charlotte's Web' Operation: 81 Arrested on First Day, Community Protests

U.S. Customs and Border Patrol conducted immigration enforcement operations in Charlotte, arresting 81 individuals on the first day. The operation, known as "Charlotte's Web," began on South Boulevard near Baleada Bar and Grill. Commander Gregory K. Bovino stated that those arrested had significant criminal and immigration backgrounds. More information about the apprehended individuals will be shared on social media.

This marks the first time CBP has led immigration enforcement in Charlotte without coordinating with ICE in the same location. Border Patrol agents were seen in various parts of the city, including South Boulevard, Central Avenue, and Albemarle Road, using vans and SUVs near businesses and busy intersections. Residents gathered for a protest at First Ward Park in Uptown, expressing opposition to the agency's presence and the fear it instilled in the immigrant community.

Asha Patel, a community organizer, voiced her concerns about Border Patrol's actions and called for their immediate departure from the city. She referenced a similar successful protest in Chicago that led to agents leaving and hoped for a similar outcome in Charlotte. The agency has not provided specific details about the operation's scope or duration in Charlotte.
