National Guardsmen Return Home: Updates on Federal Troop Missions in Chicago and Beyond

The Texas National Guardsmen who were sent to the Chicago area will be returning to their home state, according to two U.S. officials. The Guardsmen arrived at Naval Station Great Lakes in North Chicago in early October but did not deploy operationally due to ongoing legal challenges. Changes are expected in the federalized troop mission in Portland, Los Angeles, and Chicago, with a focus on ensuring a constant, enduring, and long-term presence in each city. The 200 Illinois National Guardsmen who were also federalized by President Trump to operate in Chicago will remain on active duty. U.S. Northern Command emphasized the importance of protecting federal functions, personnel, and property, and stated that they are prepared to commit troops as needed to support law enforcement partners in cities across the country. The Department will be adjusting its Title 10 footprint in the mentioned cities to maintain a consistent presence and support law enforcement efforts to keep citizens safe.
