Breaking Boundaries: The Surprising Cross-Party Friendships Among American Voters

In a recent national NBC News poll, it was found that despite the current political divide, a majority of voters who align with a specific party have close friendships with individuals from the opposing party. The survey revealed that over 8 in 10 Republicans have at least one close friend who is a Democrat, while just over 6 in 10 Democrats have a close friend who is a Republican, showing an 18 percentage point difference. This trend was more prominent among voters who are more loyal to their respective parties and hold stronger ideological beliefs. Moderate voters were also more likely to have close friendships across party lines, with moderate Republicans and Democrats having higher rates of cross-party friendships compared to their conservative and liberal counterparts, respectively. Additionally, there was a disparity in the likelihood of having a close friend from the opposite party between "core" and "soft" supporters of both Republicans and Democrats.
