New York Governor Race Poll: Stefanik Leads GOP Primary, Close Contest with Hochul

A recent poll conducted by J.L. Partners suggests that Upstate Rep. Elise Stefanik would be a strong contender in a potential Republican primary for governor, surpassing Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman by a significant margin. Stefanik garnered 74% of Republican primary voters' support compared to Blakeman's 5%. The survey also indicated a close general election race between Stefanik and Democratic incumbent Kathy Hochul, with Hochul leading by a narrow margin of 46% to 43%.
In a hypothetical match-up between Hochul and Blakeman, Hochul held a substantial lead of 11 points, with 47% of voters supporting her compared to Blakeman's 36%. Blakeman, who recently expressed interest in running for governor after winning re-election in Nassau County, faces an uphill battle against Stefanik, who enjoys higher name recognition and popularity among Republican primary voters.
Stefanik, a prominent GOP congresswoman serving her 6th term in Congress, has garnered favorable views from over 75% of Republican primary voters surveyed, while Blakeman remains relatively unknown to a majority of respondents. Pollster James Johnson of J.L. Partners noted that Stefanik's dominance in the Republican vote makes her a formidable candidate in the primary race.
The survey also highlighted potential vulnerabilities for Hochul in her re-election bid, with only 37% of voters indicating they would vote for her, while 55% expressed a desire for "someone new" in the governor's office. Johnson emphasized that the race between Hochul and a Republican challenger could be highly competitive, especially given the shifting political landscape in New York.
The poll results suggest that a high Democratic turnout could benefit Hochul, but factors such as dissatisfaction with the incoming Democratic mayor of New York City and a potential increase in Republican Party registration in the state could impact the gubernatorial race. J.L. Partners, known for its accurate polling in previous elections, conducted the surveys via live phone calls and mobile texts, interviewing 400 Republican primary voters and 500 likely general election voters.
Overall, the poll findings indicate a dynamic and closely contested race for the governorship of New York, with Elise Stefanik emerging as a frontrunner in the Republican primary and a formidable challenger to Democratic incumbent Kathy Hochul in the general election. The upcoming election cycle promises to be a competitive and closely watched political contest in the state.
