Chicago Judge to Review Potential Release of Detained Individuals in Immigration Operations

A judge in Chicago is set to review the potential release of numerous individuals detained in immigration operations. According to the National Immigrant Justice Center and ACLU, over 3,300 individuals were arrested by federal agents in the region between June and October, with 1,300 arrests specifically during Operation Midway Blitz. Allegations suggest that many of those detained have already been deported or left the U.S. to evade detention. Advocates argue that federal agents violated a court order established in 2022, known as the Castanon Nava Consent Decree, which restricts ICE from making arrests based solely on the fear of a suspect escaping before obtaining a warrant.

As the court examines the alleged violations by ICE, the judge may contemplate releasing hundreds of individuals through alternative programs such as electronic monitoring or supervised release. The hearing is scheduled to commence at 11 a.m.
