Solving the Cold Case: The Murder of Sheryl Crandell at Prince George's Hospital Center

A woman's cold case murder from nearly three decades ago at a hospital in suburban Washington, D.C., has potentially been solved by authorities. Sheryl Crandell was found dead in her office at Prince George's Hospital Center in Cheverly, Maryland, in 1998. The autopsy revealed she was strangled and sexually assaulted. Despite DNA evidence at the scene, the suspect remained unidentified until now.

The Prince George's County Police Department reopened the investigation into Crandell's murder after 27 years, utilizing advancements in technology and investigative methods. Through investigative genetic genealogy, a partnership between police, a forensic lab, and the FBI, new leads emerged in the case. The forensic tests revealed a familial connection to the suspect, ultimately leading to the identification of Baari Shabazz, formerly known as Edward Barry Watts, who lived near the hospital at the time of the crime.

Baari Shabazz passed away in 2019 at the age of 69, and authorities were unable to determine a clear motive for the attack. It is speculated that Shabazz may have intended to steal from the hospital on the night of the incident. Police Chief George Nader expressed condolences to Crandell's family and commended their perseverance over the years. The resolution of this case brings closure to a long-standing mystery and justice for the victim and her loved ones.
