Copycat Crimes: Teenagers Arrested for Imitating Axel Rudakubana's Violent Acts

Two teenagers have been apprehended for allegedly attempting to imitate Axel Rudakubana's violent actions. Rudakubana, a triple child murderer, was imprisoned earlier this year for his attacks in Southport last July, sparking a wave of unrest in the country. The youths, aged 17 and 16, were arrested after planning to carry out similar "copycat crimes." The 17-year-old from Cwmbran, South Wales, was the first to be taken into custody in June. He had expressed intentions to mimic Rudakubana's actions and had researched purchasing large knives. Police discovered a note on his phone outlining potential targets, including a nearby dance school. The teenager had also explored attacking his own school and the Oasis reunion concert in Cardiff. He has admitted to possessing a document useful for terrorism and is awaiting sentencing in January, with concerns raised about a possible autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The second arrest involved a 16-year-old boy from Merseyside who allegedly planned to target a Taylor Swift-themed event while wearing a green hoodie, mirroring Rudakubana's actions. He traveled to Southport, acquired knives, and downloaded the same al-Qaeda manual used by Rudakubana to create ricin. The teenager faces charges of making threats to kill and possessing terrorism-related documents and is expected to enter pleas in December. These arrests follow the conclusion of the first phase of the Southport Inquiry, which highlighted missed opportunities to prevent Rudakubana's crimes. Lancashire Police's Assistant Chief Constable Mark Winstanley emphasized the need to address similar behaviors in other at-risk youth. The inquiry's next phase will assess the readiness of authorities to handle violence-prone youth in the country.
