IRS Direct File Service Discontinued for 2026 Tax Season: What You Need to Know
The government-provided online tax filing service, Direct File, will not be available for the 2026 tax season, according to a letter from the Internal Revenue Service to participating states. Direct File was introduced as a Biden administration initiative to allow eligible taxpayers to file their taxes online for free, eliminating the need for paid services like TurboTax or H&R Block. The service was piloted in 2024 and was offered in 25 states for the 2025 tax season.
Despite its success, the Trump administration seems to be against continuing Direct File in its current form. The funding provided in the "Big Beautiful Bill" passed in July 2025 includes research on the cost of replacing any direct e-file programs by the IRS. Former IRS Commissioner Billy Long indicated that Direct File had been eliminated during a tax professional summit.
While the IRS has not officially announced the discontinuation of Direct File, the tool is currently unavailable on the IRS website, and the leadership position for the Direct File project within the IRS is vacant under acting Commissioner Scott Bessent. The future of Direct File remains uncertain, and updates will be provided if the IRS confirms its status for the 2026 tax season.
