Democratic Candidates Secure Key Victories in 2025 Elections: Insights from AP Voter Poll

Democratic candidates achieved success in key races on Tuesday, with indications that the Democratic Party has the potential to regain support from groups that leaned towards President Donald Trump in the 2024 election. The AP Voter Poll, which surveyed over 17,000 voters in New Jersey, Virginia, California, and New York City, provided insights into voter demographics and their perspectives on important state issues. Despite notable victories, the survey revealed some challenges for Democrats, such as differences in support between young men and women in governor races and hesitancy among Jewish voters in New York City towards Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani.

In New York City, Zohran Mamdani, at 34 years old, secured a significant win as the city's youngest mayor in over a century. Young voters in the city overwhelmingly supported Mamdani in his bid against former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. While older voters tended to favor Cuomo, Mamdani garnered substantial support from voters under 30, many of whom were first-time mayoral election participants. Mamdani's identification as a democratic socialist resonated with a quarter of New York City voters, particularly among those under 30.

In New Jersey and Virginia, Democratic candidates Mikie Sherrill and Abigail Spanberger performed well among Black, Hispanic, and Asian voters, signaling positive outcomes for the party following Trump's advances with these demographics in 2024. Sherrill's success in New Jersey was bolstered by strong support from non-white voters, with Black, Hispanic, and Asian voters largely backing her candidacy. Similarly, Spanberger in Virginia garnered significant support from minority voters, despite not winning the majority of white voters.

Mamdani's victory in New York City was buoyed by overwhelming support from Muslim voters, while Cuomo secured a majority of Jewish voters. The candidates' stances on Israel played a significant role in the voting decisions of Jewish and Muslim voters, with concerns over Mamdani's criticisms of Israel influencing Jewish voter support. Young voters, particularly women, showed strong support for Democratic candidates in the governor races and mayoral campaign, highlighting gender disparities in voting preferences among different age groups.

In Virginia, households with federal government workers were more likely to support Spanberger, reflecting the impact of government-related issues on voter choices. Despite facing opposition from veteran households, Sherrill emerged victorious in New Jersey, showcasing her ability to secure broad support across various demographics. The 2025 AP Voter Poll, conducted by SSRS, provided valuable insights into voter behavior and preferences in key states, shedding light on the evolving political landscape and demographic trends.
