Remembering Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay: A Tribute to a Legendary Vocalist

Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay, the talented vocalist known for her time with the Grateful Dead, has sadly passed away on November 2, 2025, following a battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her family at Alive Hospice in Nashville at the time of her passing. Donna Jean is survived by her husband David MacKay, her sons Kinsman and Zion, her sister Gogi Clark, and her brother Ivan Thatcher.

Originally born as Donna Jean Thatcher in Florence, Alabama, she began her music career as a session singer in Muscle Shoals, where she contributed to hit songs like Percy Sledge’s “When a Man Loves a Woman” and Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious Minds.” After moving to California and marrying pianist Keith Godchaux, she crossed paths with Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead, leading to her joining the band in 1971. Donna Jean and Keith toured extensively with the Dead until 1979, performing across the United States, Europe, and even Egypt.

Following Keith's tragic passing in a car accident, Donna Jean later married David MacKay in 1981. She continued her musical journey by forming the Donna Jean Godchaux Band alongside her husband, David, in Muscle Shoals. Throughout her career, Donna Jean's powerful vocals and presence left a lasting impact on the music industry, and she will be remembered for her contributions to the world of music.
