The Toll of Government Shutdowns: A Perspective from an Air Traffic Controller

As an air traffic controller with the Federal Aviation Administration for over a decade, I have experienced the impact of government shutdowns on my job firsthand. The uncertainty of not knowing when or if I will be paid adds to the already high stress of managing air traffic. During a shutdown, staffing is reduced, breaks are shorter, and the pressure to perform perfectly is intensified.
The current shutdown has hit me harder than before. Working without pay while ensuring the safety of passengers in the sky is a heavy burden. The financial strain has forced me to take on additional work, like delivering for DoorDash, just to make ends meet for my family. The bills keep coming, and the shutdown only adds to the financial stress.
New air traffic controllers are also feeling the impact. Many had made financial commitments based on their steady government income, only to have that stability taken away. The uncertainty of when they will be paid again is causing anxiety and fear among my colleagues.
Personally, the toll of the shutdown is evident in my daily life. I struggle to get enough sleep, juggling work, parenting, and financial worries. The stress is constant, and I worry about the impact it has on my daughter. I have reached out for help to manage my increased stress and anxiety.
What we federal workers are asking for is leadership. We need both parties to come together, negotiate, and find a solution. The current situation is unsustainable, and the impact on hard-working Americans is real. It's time for Congress to put aside their differences, find common ground, and end this shutdown for the sake of all those affected.
