The mother of New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani was interviewed when he was a college student, where she described him as not being American and emphasized his Ugandan and Indian roots. She used the term "desi" to refer to him, which is a colloquial term for people of South Asian descent. Mamdani's mother also mentioned that they speak Hindustani at home and described him as a "chaalu fellow," meaning savvy or street smart.
Zohran Mamdani, who holds dual citizenship with the U.S. and Uganda, was naturalized as an American in 2018. His father, Mahmood Mamdani, a professor at Columbia University, stated that his son's views and actions are his own and do not necessarily reflect their parenting. However, Mamdani's mother disagreed, suggesting that the environment they provided influenced his beliefs and actions.
Criticism has been directed at Mahmood Mamdani for his anti-Israel stance and association with organizations that support boycotts and sanctions against Israel. Social media backlash intensified when a video surfaced of Mahmood Mamdani claiming that Adolf Hitler was inspired by Abraham Lincoln. Zohran Mamdani's identification as "Black or African American" on a college application also sparked controversy earlier this year.
Critics argue that rejecting the label of "American" while benefiting from the country's freedoms and opportunities undermines American values of gratitude, unity, and pride in the nation. They believe that instilling a sense of detachment from the country in a child can lead to resentment and a lack of loyalty. This sentiment is seen as contributing to the current political climate.
The Mamdani campaign and Mira Nair, a renowned filmmaker in India and Zohran Mamdani's mother, were contacted for comment but did not respond. Nair expressed her belief in the Hindustan Times interview that her son's future lies in politics due to his interest in current affairs and political issues, rather than following her path in filmmaking.
