Political Divide Deepens as Democrats Endorse Socialist Candidate for NYC Mayor

Republicans are criticizing top Democratic Party figures for supporting Zohran Mamdani, a self-proclaimed socialist and the Democratic nominee for New York City mayor. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries endorsed Mamdani, drawing backlash from Republicans like Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, who accused Democrats of allowing the radical left to take over the party for self-preservation.

Political commentator Ryan Girdusky believes Jeffries' endorsement is a strategic move to appease the far Left and avoid a serious challenge in the future. However, Girdusky doubts the effectiveness of this strategy and suggests that Mamdani may still support a challenger against Jeffries. Jeffries joins other prominent socialist and Democrat leaders in endorsing Mamdani, including New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Sen. Bernie Sanders.

At a rally in Queens, Hochul, Ocasio-Cortez, and Sanders showed their support for Mamdani, with Ocasio-Cortez emphasizing the need for affordable housing, decent wages, healthcare, and childcare. Mamdani outlined his vision for the city, promising to freeze rent for over 2 million tenants, provide universal childcare, and eliminate bus fares. Malliotakis believes these policies will have negative consequences for national Democrats and New York City residents in terms of public safety, affordability, and quality of life.

Mamdani's main rival in the mayoral race, former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, received a boost from current New York City Mayor Eric Adams' endorsement. The race for New York City mayor is heating up as candidates seek support from influential figures to secure victory in the upcoming election.
