Demi Lovato Returns to Pop Roots: A Look at 'It's Not That Deep

Demi Lovato is making a comeback to her pop music roots with the release of her ninth studio album, It’s Not That Deep, under Island Records. This album, set to drop on October 24, showcases a return to dance-pop, a departure from her recent rock-influenced projects. Produced by Zhone and featuring collaborations with Leland, Oscar Linnander, and Keith Sorrells, the album consists of 11 tracks, including hit singles like “Fast,” “Here All Night,” and “Kiss,” highlighting Lovato’s powerful vocals set against energetic, club-friendly beats.

Describing It’s Not That Deep as “free, fun, and alive,” Lovato expresses her newfound joy in creating music and a shift towards a more liberated sound. She acknowledges that while her rock music was a passion project, this album represents a return to the musical style that brought her commercial success with hits like “Confident” and “Cool for the Summer.”

The album’s genesis followed a period of self-discovery for Lovato, who questioned her passion for music after directing the documentary Child Star in 2024. However, the experience reignited her love for music, leading to the creation of the track “You’ll Be OK, Kid” for the film’s soundtrack. Teasing her return in mid-2025 by clearing her social media accounts and posting cryptic lyrics, Demi officially kicked off the album’s promotion with the release of “Fast” in August, followed by “Here All Night” in September and “Kiss” as the latest single.

To celebrate the album’s launch and its lively vibe, Demi Lovato will perform at One Night Only at the Palladium in Los Angeles on October 25, marking her first major live show in two years. This event promises to be a thrilling reunion between the pop star and her devoted fans, showcasing the vibrant energy and infectious spirit of It’s Not That Deep.
