Michigan Woman Arrested on 48 Counts of Child Sexual Abuse: Details of the Case Unfold

A woman from Michigan has been arrested on multiple charges related to the alleged sexual abuse of children she babysat over several years. Gaila Bennett, 63, of Midland, faces 48 counts in connection with the reported abuse, which occurred between 2013 and 2020. The accusations came to light when a family contacted the Tri-City Post police in October, prompting an investigation into Bennett's actions at her home in Midland County.
During the investigation, troopers seized Bennett's electronic devices from her residence on Prairie Road in Midland County. Subsequently, she was charged with 24 counts of criminal sexual conduct in the first degree, 12 counts of criminal sexual conduct in the second degree, and 12 counts of assault with intent to commit sexual penetration. The children alleged that Bennett engaged in inappropriate behavior, including posing them in sexually explicit situations, inappropriate touching, and sexual penetration. They also claimed that Bennett administered unknown medication and rubbed soap in their eyes.
One of the children reported that Bennett threatened to confine her in a woodshop all day if she did not comply with the abuse. Following the disclosure of the abuse on October 5, the children underwent forensic examinations at the Bay County Child Advocacy Center. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not ruled out the possibility of filing additional charges against Bennett.
Bennett appeared in Midland County District Court for arraignment and is currently held in custody on a $5 million bond. Her next court hearing is scheduled for November 4. The case continues to unfold as law enforcement officials work to gather more evidence and ensure justice for the victims of the alleged abuse.
