Political Tensions Escalate: Man Shot at Over Trump Banner Dispute in North Carolina

A man in North Carolina reported being shot at by an enraged motorist who removed a Trump banner from his mother's property, highlighting the escalating political tensions in the country. Mark Thomas, a river rafting business owner, witnessed the incident on September 6 when a man in an "Antifa-style mask" took down the banner near his mother's home.
The man, identified as Benjamin Michael Campbell, allegedly tore down the banner after speeding and abruptly stopping his vehicle. Thomas, a Second Amendment supporter, fired warning shots into the air before Campbell retaliated by shooting through the sunroof and later firing more shots at the house, hitting a refrigerator.
Campbell, a 38-year-old accountant from Atlanta, was arrested and faces charges including assault with a deadly weapon, discharging a firearm, and property damage. Thomas expressed surprise that the suspect was a professional in his late 30s and emphasized the irrationality of the attack over a political sign.
Despite initially hesitating to involve the police, Thomas eventually called them when Campbell returned and fired more shots. He mentioned that Campbell did not see other Trump signs on the property, which could have escalated the situation further.
Thomas clarified that he had no intention of harming Campbell and credited the shooter's poor aim for his survival. The incident occurred shortly before the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, prompting Thomas to highlight the increasing violence amid political divisions and alleged encouragement of hostility by some Democratic officials.
Thomas expressed a desire to speak with Campbell to understand his motives and potentially reconcile. He emphasized the gravity of the situation and the need for dialogue to prevent such incidents in the future. Thomas even considered reaching out to Campbell in jail to discuss the events and their implications.
