Originally from New York, Jackson initially pursued music on the piano before transitioning to the guitar during his teenage years. Influenced by bass legends James Jamerson and Jack Casady, he eventually found his passion in the bass guitar. Beginning his career in the Philadelphia soul scene, Jackson made a name for himself as a session musician with Philadelphia International Records and toured with Billy Paul.
