Attorney General Candidates Clash in University of Richmond Debate Amid Controversy

A debate between Democratic Attorney General candidate Jay Jones and Republican incumbent Jason Miyares is scheduled to take place at the University of Richmond at 6 p.m. Thursday. Republican officials, including Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, have called for Jones to withdraw from the race due to violent texts that surfaced. Miyares has criticized Jones for his remarks, calling them disqualifying in the current political climate. Jones has publicly expressed remorse for his comments and reached out to the individuals mentioned in the texts to apologize. The debate, organized by the University of Richmond School of Law and the Virginia State Bar, will not be televised but will be available for streaming on the law school's website. Despite the recent scandal, a poll conducted by Christopher Newport University's Wason Center showed Jones leading Miyares by 6 points.
