U.S. Citizen Detained by ICE in Portland: Attorney Seeks Transparency and Accountability

A U.S. citizen in Portland, Oregon, was detained by plainclothes officers and held at the city’s U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement building for hours before being released, according to his attorney. Francisco Miranda was approached by multiple agents outside his workplace who claimed he was on an overstay. Despite Miranda's objections and assertion of his U.S. citizenship, he was handcuffed, put into an unmarked vehicle, and taken to the ICE building. He was eventually returned to his workplace after several hours of detention.
The incident, which occurred on October 2, was captured on video by Miranda, where he can be heard questioning the officers about the reason for his detention. The attorney representing Miranda, Michael Fuller, highlighted that this was the first known case of a U.S. citizen being detained on the grounds of being in the country illegally in Oregon. Similar detentions have been reported in other states, including Alabama, Florida, and Southern California.
The aggressive immigration enforcement under President Donald Trump's administration has sparked outrage and concern among lawmakers and citizens. Democratic U.S. Rep. Janelle Bynum expressed her anger over the incident, stating that masked federal agents are not welcome in the state and cannot detain American citizens unlawfully. Fuller has requested documentation and information from the Department of Homeland Security to understand the justification for Miranda's detention, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability in such cases.
The attorney hopes that ICE and senior officials will provide the necessary documentation to clarify the circumstances surrounding Miranda's detention. If it was indeed an honest mistake, Fuller is open to resolving the issue without legal action. However, the lack of answers and transparency from DHS has prompted the attorney to seek clarification through formal channels. The case highlights the importance of upholding the rights of U.S. citizens and ensuring that law enforcement agencies operate within the bounds of the law.
