Uber Driver Accused of Starting Palisades Fire: Witness Recounts Alarming Ride

Jonathan Rinderknecht, a 29-year-old Uber driver, has been accused of starting the Palisades Fire. Prosecutors allege that Rinderknecht, after dropping off passengers, drove to the Palisades area, where he started a fire near Skull Rock Trailhead. Using witness statements and surveillance footage, investigators determined that Rinderknecht used an open flame to ignite the fire, which eventually spread and caused significant damage in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood.

A passenger who rode with Rinderknecht on New Year's Eve described him as an angry individual who ranted about various topics during the ride. The passenger, Brennan White, recalled the unsettling experience and later cooperated with LAPD detectives who contacted him about the Uber driver's behavior. White provided details about the ride, including the driver's name and the location where he was dropped off. Upon seeing a photo of Rinderknecht in the news, White recognized him by his distinctive long hair.

White, who has worked as a bartender in Malibu, expressed regret that he couldn't have done more to prevent the fire, knowing people who lost their homes in the blaze. Uber responded to the situation by suspending the driver's access to the platform and cooperating with the authorities during the investigation. The incident serves as a reminder of the impact of reckless actions and the importance of reporting suspicious behavior to prevent potential harm.
