Israeli Politics in Turmoil: Lapid Extends Support to Netanyahu Amid Hostage Crisis

Two years have passed since the tragic events of October 7, 2023, when Hamas terrorists attacked Israel, resulting in the deaths of 1,200 individuals and the abduction of 251 others into the Gaza Strip. The Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, is currently facing the risk of his government collapsing due to the absence of a hostage deal.

In a surprising turn of events, former Prime Minister Yair Lapid, the leader of the opposition, has extended a "security net" to Netanyahu to help stabilize the government amid ongoing negotiations with Hamas. Lapid emphasized the importance of bringing the hostages back home in an interview with Fox News Digital.

The need for Lapid's support arises from the criticism faced by Netanyahu from right-wing leaders within his coalition, such as National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who have opposed Netanyahu's acceptance of President Donald Trump's peace plan with Hamas. The coalition lost its majority in the Israeli parliament in July, leaving Netanyahu with only 50 out of 120 seats.

The possibility of special elections being triggered upon the parliament's return in October is high, according to Lapid. He believes that a centrist government, encompassing both right and left ideologies, would be favored by the Israeli public. This government would prioritize Israeli security while also working towards ending the conflict in Gaza and restoring Jerusalem's international reputation.

Lapid expressed regret over the lack of political courage within the current government to acknowledge the human cost of the conflict with Hamas. He highlighted the negative impact of the government's ambiguity on Israel's strategy, media bias, false reporting, and international support.

During a meeting with Netanyahu on October 7, 2023, Lapid proposed forming a unity government to address the unprecedented challenges faced by Israel. However, Netanyahu was hesitant to pursue this path, a decision that Lapid still regrets.

Netanyahu's 15-year tenure as prime minister has been described as admirable and resilient by Lapid. However, Lapid also acknowledged the benefits of term limits, comparing them to the system in the United States.

Lapid believes that Israelis are ready for a unity government to counter Netanyahu's hard-right coalition. He anticipates that the upcoming elections will be based on hope and will transcend political divides, emphasizing the need to rebuild Israeli society after a challenging period.

As of the publication of this report, Netanyahu's office had not responded to inquiries from Fox News Digital.
