California Recognizes Diwali as a Statewide Holiday: What You Need to Know

California has officially recognized Diwali, the Hindu "Festival of Lights," as a statewide holiday, making it the third U.S. state to do so. Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill into law to take effect on January 1. The law allows public schools and community colleges to close on Diwali, and state employees can choose to take the day off. Public school students will receive an excused absence to observe the holiday. The legislation acknowledges that Diwali is also celebrated by Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists.
