Battle for the 7th Congressional District: Tennessee Primary Special Election Overview
The Tennessee primary special election to fill the seat vacated by former U.S. Rep. Mark Green has attracted a crowded field of candidates from both the Democratic and Republican parties. The 7th Congressional District, which covers 14 counties and includes parts of Nashville, rural areas, wealthy suburbs, and Fort Campbell military installation, is a key battleground in this election.
With 11 Republicans vying for the nomination, the race has garnered attention, especially after President Donald Trump endorsed candidate Matt Van Epps. Van Epps, a former general services commissioner under Governor Bill Lee, received endorsements from both the governor and Green. Other notable Republican candidates include state representatives Gino Bulso and Jody Barrett, who have also been actively campaigning.
The campaign has seen significant financial investments, with outside groups spending over $3.1 million, primarily supporting Republican candidates. Bulso, who has been vocal about socially conservative policies, has invested nearly $700,000 of his own money in the race. Barrett, who faced opposition for his stance on school vouchers, has received support from school choice advocates and the House Freedom Fund.
In addition to the well-funded candidates, there are other contenders in the race, including Mason Foley, a healthcare businessman, and Stewart Parks, who was pardoned by Trump after the Capitol insurrection. The Democratic side features four candidates who have criticized Trump's policies and tariffs, with each candidate bringing their unique background and priorities to the campaign.
The primary election on Tuesday will be a crucial test for the candidates, as they seek to secure their party's nomination and ultimately win the general election on December 2. The outcome of this election will not only determine the next representative for the 7th Congressional District but also serve as a barometer of public sentiment towards Trump's agenda and the direction of the Republican Party.
