Renewable Energy Surpasses Coal: A Global Shift in Power Generation

Renewable energy sources such as wind and solar farms have surpassed coal plants in generating electricity for the first time this year, marking a significant shift in the global power system. A recent report by the climate thinktank Ember revealed that in the first half of 2025, renewable energy outpaced the world's electricity demand growth, resulting in a decrease in coal and gas usage. Solar power production increased by almost a third compared to the previous year, meeting 83% of the global electricity demand growth, while wind power saw a growth of over 7%, leading to renewables displacing fossil fuels.
This milestone signifies a crucial turning point in the energy landscape, as clean power sources like solar and wind are now expanding rapidly enough to meet the increasing global electricity demand. The surge in renewables was primarily driven by China and India, while the US and Europe continued to rely more heavily on fossil fuels. The International Energy Agency (IEA) also predicts a significant growth in global renewables by the end of the decade, with solar power expected to dominate the expansion, supported by wind, hydropower, bioenergy, and geothermal sources.
According to the IEA, China is projected to remain the largest market for renewable energy growth, with India emerging as the second-largest market in the coming years. Additionally, countries like Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and several south-east Asian nations are expected to experience a surge in solar power capacity. China led the world in adding renewable energy capacity, resulting in a decrease in fossil fuel usage, while India significantly increased its renewable energy production, leading to a decline in coal and gas consumption.
However, the US experienced a rise in coal generation due to a higher electricity demand outpacing the growth of renewables. In the EU, despite modest electricity demand growth, a decrease in wind and hydro power generation led to an increase in gas and coal usage. Overall, the shift towards renewable energy sources like solar and wind marks a positive trend in the global power sector, with the potential for further growth and reduced reliance on fossil fuels in the future.
