House Collapses in Buxton: Impact of Recent Hurricanes on Outer Banks Properties

Several houses in Buxton on the Outer Banks were destroyed by the recent hurricanes Humberto and Imelda, resulting in strong surf along the southeast coast. These collapses bring the total number of house collapses in the area to 17 over the past five years, with the most recent incident occurring just two weeks ago. The first house collapse was reported on Tuesday afternoon, followed by four more neighboring homes collapsing into the sea shortly after.
Local residents witnessed the destruction, and 13News Now's Alex Littlehales was present at the scene to document the aftermath of the collapses. Efforts are being made to gather more information from the Cape Hatteras National Seashore regarding the incidents. Prior to the recent collapses, the last house collapse in the Outer Banks was in November 2024 in Rodanthe, following a series of four other collapses within a month.
For updates and details on the threatened structures in the area, visitors can refer to the Cape Hatteras National Seashore's website. The ongoing house collapses serve as a reminder of the vulnerability of coastal properties to the forces of nature, highlighting the importance of monitoring and addressing potential risks to safeguard homes and communities.
