Sinkhole Chaos: Traffic Disruptions and Evacuations in Bangkok
A significant sinkhole appeared on a major road in Bangkok, causing traffic disruptions, infrastructure damage, and evacuations in the area. Fortunately, there were no casualties, but three vehicles were affected by the collapse. The sinkhole was believed to be a result of construction work at an underground train station. Videos captured the road sinking slowly, pulling down electricity poles and damaging water pipes, leading to the complete severance of the four-lane road.
Evacuations were carried out from the police station and nearby buildings, with a hospital deciding to close outpatient services for two days as a precaution. Electricity and water in the area were cut off, and efforts were underway to repair the sinkhole promptly to prevent further damage, especially with the rainy season in Bangkok from May to October. Emergency workers used a crane to remove a pickup truck teetering on the edge of the hole, with another truck visible inside the approximately 160-foot-deep sinkhole.
Residents in the vicinity, like 27-year-old hospital worker Noppadech Pitpeng, were startled by the rumbling sound that accompanied the sinkhole's appearance. The incident highlights the importance of monitoring infrastructure projects to prevent such occurrences and ensuring the safety of residents and commuters in the city.
