Challenges Ahead: Spirit Airlines Plans Furloughs for Flight Attendants and Pilots Amid Financial Struggles
Spirit Airlines is facing financial challenges and is planning to furlough approximately 1,800 flight attendants, which amounts to about a third of its cabin crew members. The decision to reduce costs comes as the budget airline navigates its second bankruptcy in less than a year. The airline's chief operating officer, John Bendoraitis, communicated this news to flight attendants in a memo, highlighting the tough choices the company has to make to restore profitability.
In an effort to stabilize its business, Spirit Airlines is looking to downsize its fleet, which may result in job cuts. Currently, around 800 flight attendants have taken voluntary leaves of absence, helping the airline avoid involuntary furloughs. However, the airline has reached the limit for voluntary leaves, prompting the need for additional measures. While the exact number of cabin crew members affected by the furloughs is not yet determined, the airline will initially offer voluntary furloughs to employees.
Apart from flight attendants, Spirit Airlines has also furloughed numerous pilots as part of its cost-cutting strategy. The airline is aiming to achieve $100 million in cost reductions from its aviators. Management has engaged in discussions with the Air Line Pilots Association to negotiate agreements by October 1. Despite the ongoing negotiations, the airline may seek relief from labor contracts as part of the bankruptcy proceedings.
