Authoritarian Actions: Trump's Threats and Attacks on Democracy

When critics of Donald Trump on the left accuse him of being authoritarian, Republicans often dismiss their concerns. However, the focus should be on Trump's actions rather than the rhetoric of his detractors. In a recent 24-hour period, Trump's actions highlighted the authoritarian nature of his agenda. He discussed targeting progressive organizations and bringing racketeering charges against individuals. Trump also boasted about a military strike on a civilian boat, questioned the First Amendment rights of anti-war protesters, and filed a lawsuit against The New York Times. Additionally, he threatened a journalist and suggested the Justice Department might go after reporters for "hate speech." Trump also called for the incarceration of a prosecutor and bragged about naval forces taking out civilian boats. Furthermore, he announced his refusal to enforce a federal law related to TikTok. These actions collectively demonstrate a disregard for democracy and the rule of law, reflecting a pattern of behavior seen over the past eight months. Unfortunately, there is a likelihood of more such instances in the future.
