The Rise of Socialism in the Democratic Party: Insights from the DSA Fund Survey

Socialism is gaining popularity within the Democratic Party, as indicated by a recent survey funded by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) Fund. The survey, conducted by Data for Progress, reveals that a majority of Democrats favor socialism over capitalism and support left-leaning candidates like Zohran Mamdani and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The DSA Fund's executive director, Gabe Tobias, highlighted that the party's mainstream desires both democratic socialism as a value system and politicians who align with this ideology.
The survey shows that over half (53 percent) of likely Democrat voters prefer socialist figures such as Sen. Bernie Sanders, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez, and New York mayoral candidate Mamdani, while 33 percent back establishment Democrats like Sen. Chuck Schumer, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. The survey also indicates that Democrats have a positive view of elected officials who identify as democratic socialists and favor the principles of democratic socialism over capitalism.
When presented with the definitions of democratic socialism and capitalism, a significant majority of Democrat voters (74 percent) expressed alignment with democratic socialism, while a smaller percentage (16 percent) identified more closely with capitalism. The survey findings suggest that socialism resonates well with Democrats but is less appealing to Republicans and many independents, particularly in red and battleground areas where far-left Democrats face challenges.
The survey, conducted with 1,257 likely voters in August, marks the first formal poll released by the DSA Fund. It underscores the growing support for socialism within the Democratic Party and sheds light on the ideological preferences of Democrat voters. The survey results provide valuable insights into the political landscape and the shifting attitudes towards socialism and capitalism among different voter groups.
