Governor Tim Walz Announces Bid for Historic Third Term in Minnesota

Governor Tim Walz has declared his intention to run for a third term as governor of Minnesota. He first entered politics in southern Minnesota and secured the governorship in 2018. Throughout his tenure, he has navigated challenging events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the murder of George Floyd, and subsequent unrest. Despite facing a divided government, Walz managed to pass a $66 billion two-year budget bill this year with a narrowly split Legislature.
However, Walz has faced criticism for the misuse of COVID-era nutrition and housing assistance programs. His brief stint as Kamala Harris's running mate in the 2020 presidential election ended in defeat, leading him back to Minnesota's political landscape. The governor has encountered opposition from both conservative and liberal factions within his party, as well as scrutiny of his personal and professional history.
At 61 years old, Walz has not ruled out future campaigns for national office. If re-elected, he would become the first Minnesota governor to serve three consecutive four-year terms. While he is expected to secure the DFL nomination easily, the Republican field includes several candidates vying for the governorship.
Walz had initially planned to announce his decision after the legislative session but expedited the process following recent tragic events in the state. The upcoming statewide endorsing contests and potential primary elections in 2026 will shape the political landscape for the gubernatorial race.
