Arthur Sze Named U.S. Poet Laureate for 2025-26: A Look at His Appointment and Upcoming Events

Arthur Sze, a renowned poet and former instructor at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico, has been appointed as the U.S. poet laureate for 2025-26 by the Library of Congress. He officially began his tenure on September 1, succeeding Ada Limón and Joy Harjo. Sze's selection was influenced by his receipt of the Rebekah Johnson Bobbitt National Prize for Poetry last year. To kick off his term, Sze will be reading his poetry at the library's Coolidge Auditorium in Washington on October 9. While his term is set to end in April, there is a possibility of an extension, similar to his predecessors Limón and Harjo. Sze previously served as Santa Fe's poet laureate from 2006 to 2008.
