Zoox Launches Robotaxi Service in Las Vegas: A Futuristic Ride on the Strip

Amazon's Zoox has launched its robotaxi service in Las Vegas, marking the first commercial deployment of purpose-built autonomous vehicles. The toaster-shaped AVs will be available for passenger trips on the Las Vegas Strip, with limited pickups and dropoffs at select destinations such as Resort World Las Vegas and Topgolf. Zoox plans to expand its service gradually by adding new destinations over time.

The robotaxis are fully driverless and lack traditional controls like pedals and steering wheels. Passengers sit on bench seats facing each other inside the vehicle, while the exterior is equipped with sensors like cameras, lidar, and radar. The vehicles operate at speeds up to 45 mph and offer a unique and futuristic transportation experience for riders.

Zoox is also inviting riders to join a waitlist for its robotaxi service in San Francisco, where the company has a permit to test its driverless vehicles. In Las Vegas, designated pickup and dropoff zones have been established at partnering destinations like Resort World and AREA15, with Zoox concierges available to assist passengers with any questions they may have.

Customers can request rides through the Zoox app, which provides details like wait times, license plate numbers of arriving vehicles, and options to submit feedback. A "help" button in the app and vehicle connects passengers to remote operators for assistance. While some testers have criticized the thin and uncomfortable seats in the vehicles, overall feedback has been positive, with the robotaxis performing well on predetermined routes.

With plans to deploy a total of 50 vehicles in both Las Vegas and San Francisco, Zoox aims to scale its service to meet increasing demand over time. The company is also testing vehicles in cities like Los Angeles, Seattle, and Austin, as it continues to innovate and expand its autonomous transportation offerings. The launch of Zoox's robotaxi service in Las Vegas represents a significant milestone in the development of autonomous mobility solutions for urban environments.
