Federal Appeals Court Blocks Trump's Use of 18th-Century Law for Deportations

A recent ruling by a federal appeals court panel has determined that President Donald Trump cannot utilize an 18th-century wartime law to expedite the deportations of individuals accused of being part of a Venezuelan gang. This decision has halted a key initiative of the administration and is expected to be challenged in the U.S. Supreme Court. The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, known for its conservative stance, voted 2-1 in favor of immigrant rights advocates and lower court rulings, stating that the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 was not intended for use against groups like Tren de Aragua, the Venezuelan gang targeted by Trump earlier this year. The administration had deported alleged Tren de Aragua members to a dangerous prison in El Salvador, arguing that U.S. courts lacked jurisdiction to release them.
