Florida Beaches: The Top Destination for Shark Attacks in the United States

Florida beaches have been identified as having the highest number of shark attacks in the United States over the past several centuries. A recent report by Tideschart analyzed data from 1642 to 2024 and found that 9 out of the top 10 beaches with shark attacks were in Florida. New Smyrna Beach, Florida, topped the list with 277 shark attacks.

Ryan Blundell, the founder of Tideschart, emphasized the importance of being aware of the risks associated with swimming in certain Florida beaches. While the concentration of shark attacks along Florida's coastline is significant, Blundell advised beachgoers not to panic but to stay informed about local marine conditions and follow safety guidelines when entering the water.

The list of U.S. beaches with the most shark attacks includes New Smyrna Beach, Daytona Beach, Cocoa Beach, Myrtle Beach, Palm Beach, Indialantic Boardwalk, Fort Pierce Inlet, Jupiter Beach Park, Riviera Beach, Cape Canaveral, and Isle of Palms. Other cities like Galveston, Texas; Monterey, California; and Gulf Shores Public Beach in Alabama were ranked lower on the list.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission offers advice for swimmers concerned about shark attacks, such as staying in groups, avoiding swimming too far from shore, and being cautious in murky waters. In July, a surfer was bitten by a shark on New Smyrna Beach, known as the "shark bite capital of the world."

Despite the high number of shark attacks in Florida, beachgoers are encouraged to enjoy the ocean while being mindful of potential risks. Understanding shark patterns and behaviors can help individuals make informed decisions about when and where to swim in the water. Stay safe and informed while enjoying the beautiful beaches of Florida.
