K-Pop Idols and Neurodiversity: Understanding ADHD in the Industry

BTS member Jungkook recently revealed that he is neurodivergent during a live stream. Neurodivergent individuals have brains that develop or function differently due to various factors such as genetic disorders, injury, or mental health conditions like depression. Those who function typically are referred to as neurotypical.

K-Pop enthusiasts, many of whom are neurodivergent themselves, have noticed similarities between idols and themselves. One common trait fans have observed in idols is the presence of ADHD, a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by difficulties in concentration and restlessness. These traits can persist from childhood into adulthood.

GOT7's Jackson Wang is one idol who has openly shared his ADHD diagnosis. During a live stream on August 29, Jungkook was advised by a fan to stop moving while sitting. He explained that he couldn't control his movements, attributing it to "adult ADHD" that causes him to continuously fidget.

Following Jungkook's disclosure, fans expressed joy at his representation of individuals with ADHD. Some hoped that his acknowledgment would discourage people from making comments about his movements, as stimming is a coping mechanism for individuals with ADHD to regulate themselves.
