Tragic Shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church: Family Speaks Out, Community Responds

The family of one of the victims in the tragic shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church in southwest Minneapolis has spoken out. The father identified the victim as 8-year-old Fletcher Merkel. Another child, aged 10, was also killed, and 18 people were injured, including 15 students from Annunciation between 6 and 15 years old, as well as three elderly adults. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara stated that all the children are expected to survive, but some victims were in critical condition upon arrival at the hospital. Hennepin Healthcare CEO Thomas Klemond described one child's condition as "touch and go." The shooting has garnered responses from various officials, advocacy groups, and religious leaders, with President Trump and Gov. Tim Walz ordering flags to fly at half-mast in honor of the victims. Vigils and moments of silence have been held to remember the victims, and efforts are underway to support those affected by the tragedy.
