Legal Battle Over 'Alligator Alcatraz': Judge Orders Closure of Immigration Detention Center in Florida Everglades

A federal judge in Miami has declined to halt her order to close the immigration detention center in the Florida Everglades, also known as "Alligator Alcatraz," while the government appeals the decision. The judge's ruling was in response to a lawsuit brought by environmental groups and the Miccosukee Tribe, who argued that the facility posed a threat to the sensitive wetlands in the area.

The judge's order requires the population of the facility to decrease within 60 days by transferring detainees to other locations. Once this is done, the fencing, lighting, and generators at the facility should be removed. The state and federal defendants are prohibited from bringing in any new detainees to the property.

The detention center was hastily constructed at a training airport in the Everglades and officially opened on July 1. President Donald Trump visited the facility and suggested it could serve as a model for future detention centers as the administration aims to increase deportations.

Civil rights groups have filed multiple lawsuits against the state and federal governments over the practices at the Everglades facility. They claim that detainees were being held without access to the legal system and that there were severe problems at the facility.

The civil rights groups are seeking a restraining order and temporary injunction to prevent Florida agencies and their contractors from holding detainees at the facility. They argue that immigration is a federal issue and that Florida agencies do not have the authority to operate such facilities.

Governor Ron DeSantis' administration is planning to open a second immigration detention facility called "Deportation Depot" at a state prison in north Florida. The legal battles surrounding the Everglades facility highlight the ongoing controversy and challenges in the immigration detention system.
