Temporary Traffic Contraflow System on Highway 40: Travel Updates and Alternatives

A traffic contraflow system has been implemented on Highway 40 between Berthierville and Lanoraie in the Lanaudière region, allowing one lane to be open in each direction. This temporary measure was taken following the collapse of a culvert under the two westbound lanes on Saturday. Motorists can now use the contraflow system to avoid a detour, but traffic between Montreal and Trois-Rivières on Highway 40 will be restricted to one lane in each direction until further notice. The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility advises that congestion is likely in the area and suggests using Highway 20 for travel between Montreal and Trois-Rivières. The contraflow system is in effect between Route 158 in Berthierville and Chemin de Joliette in Lanoraie.
