Andrew Cuomo Criticizes Zohran Mamdani's Stance on Prostitution in NYC Mayoral Race

Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is intensifying his criticism of New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani regarding the issue of prostitution. Cuomo, an independent candidate for mayor, claims that if Mamdani, a democratic socialist state lawmaker, wins the election, New York City will become the prostitution capital of the country. Mamdani has previously advocated for the decriminalization of sex work but has been less vocal about the issue during his current mayoral campaign.
Cuomo pointed out that Mamdani did not provide a clear answer when asked about directing the NYPD to stop making prostitution arrests. He suggested that Mamdani's approach would resemble that of former Mayor Bill de Blasio, whom Cuomo has criticized in the past. Proponents of decriminalizing prostitution argue that it protects sex workers from exploitation and violence, but studies suggest that legalizing prostitution can lead to an increase in crime and human trafficking.
Parts of New York City have seen a rise in sex workers since the repeal of statutes against loitering for the purpose of prostitution in early 2021. Cuomo expressed concern about the impact of prostitution on local businesses and neighborhoods during a recent visit to Queens. Mamdani, who could become the city's first Muslim and first millennial mayor, has faced criticism from incumbent Mayor Eric Adams over his stance on prostitution.
Mamdani's primary victory was driven by a campaign focused on affordability and addressing the city's high cost of living. He received support from national progressive figures like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders. Mamdani's platform includes proposals to make CUNY tuition-free, provide free childcare, and set up government-run grocery stores. Recent polls indicate that Mamdani is leading in the mayoral race, where Democrats significantly outnumber Republicans.
In addition to Mamdani and Adams, Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa and independent candidate Jim Walden are also running for mayor. The Mamdani campaign has not responded to Cuomo's recent criticism. The upcoming election will determine who will lead New York City and address key issues such as affordability and public safety.
