Vine City Station Escalator Reopens After Beyoncé Concert Incident: MARTA Enhances Safety Measures

The Vine City Station escalator that malfunctioned after a Beyoncé concert has been reopened by MARTA. An investigation revealed that the escalator became overloaded when a concertgoer screamed at the sight of a bug, prompting a rush of passengers onto the escalator. The incident occurred after midnight on July 15 as concert attendees were leaving the Beyoncé concert at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
A state inspection confirmed that the escalator oversped and stopped due to the high volume of passengers. The investigation found that some motor belts had been dislodged from their pulleys, despite the escalator passing a compliance check during regular maintenance less than a week before the incident.
Following the investigation, MARTA's escalator service provider, Schindler, replaced the affected equipment components, conducted a thorough systems inspection, and performed safety checks. The escalator has been cleared for service after a final safety check by the state inspector.
MARTA plans to enhance staffing and crowd control measures for future large events to prevent similar incidents. The transit authority reassured customers that all escalators undergo routine inspections, maintenance, and repairs to ensure their safety.
MARTA is in the final stages of a systemwide elevator and escalator rehabilitation program, which includes refurbishing or replacing all 150 escalators at 38 rail stations. The ongoing efforts aim to improve the safety and reliability of the transit system for passengers.
