Rhode Island Man Indicted for Threats Against President Trump and Officials: A Case Study in Public Figure Security

A Rhode Island man has been indicted by a federal grand jury for making threats against President Donald Trump, Attorney General Pamela Bondi, and White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller. The charges stem from a social media post made earlier this summer. The incident underscores the ongoing threats of violence against public figures, with previous attempts on Trump's life in 2024. The post, which contained profanity and threats, was reported to the U.S. Secret Service by Trump Media and Technology. Federal investigators traced the post to the man's email address and Providence address associated with a nonprofit housing program.

The man, identified as Carl D. Montague, was located and admitted to making the threatening post. He was initially charged and released under GPS monitoring pending further legal proceedings. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Dulce Donovan and investigated by the FBI, U.S. Secret Service, and Providence Police Department. Montague claimed that he was under the influence of marijuana when he made the post and had no specific reason for targeting the individuals mentioned. He stated that he had no intentions of carrying out any violence and did not have access to weapons.

Montague will face arraignment in federal court on the charges of threatening the president and interstate communications of threats. The possible penalties for these charges include up to five years in prison. The court will review the conditions of his release, which currently include GPS monitoring. The case serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of making threats against public officials and the importance of law enforcement agencies in investigating and prosecuting such cases.
