Anchorage Protesters Rally for Ukraine Ahead of Trump-Putin Summit: Concerns and Hopes

Alaska's largest city, Anchorage, saw a gathering of over 100 protesters, predominantly Ukraine supporters, ahead of the much-anticipated meeting between President Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin. The demonstrators congregated on a popular street corner in Anchorage, expressing concerns about the upcoming Trump-Putin summit in the state, where discussions on peace in Ukraine were expected. Despite their presence, many protesters, mainly Democrats, were skeptical about the outcome of the peace talks, especially since Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky would not be attending.
Barbara Hood, a long-time Anchorage resident, displayed a large Ukrainian flag to convey a message to both Trump and Putin, emphasizing that the Russian leader could easily bring about peace if he desired. However, Hood, like many others, doubted the likelihood of significant progress towards peace emerging from the summit. President Trump's scheduled meeting with Putin at Elmendorf Air Force Base was seen as a preliminary step to gather more information on Putin's intentions before a potential follow-up meeting with Zelensky to finalize a peace deal, possibly involving "land swaps."
Maryellen Lambert, another Anchorage resident and frequent attendee of anti-Trump rallies with "Stand Up Alaska," echoed the sentiment that Putin could facilitate peace by withdrawing from Ukraine. Lambert expressed concerns that Putin might manipulate Trump into conceding territories in exchange for a peace agreement, rather than genuinely seeking peace. The protest signs, predominantly held by Democrats, raised questions about Alaska's vulnerability to Putin's territorial ambitions and called for Putin to respect Alaska's sovereignty.
Despite the protesters' apprehensions, Trump remained optimistic about his dialogue with Putin, giving a 75% chance of success in their conversation. He expressed hope for a constructive discussion that could pave the way for a trilateral meeting involving Zelensky. The signs at the protest underscored Alaska's solidarity with Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The protesters' presence highlighted their concerns about the potential outcomes of the Trump-Putin summit and the need for a diplomatic approach to address the crisis in Ukraine.
