2025 Florida Python Challenge: Taylor Stanberry Wins Ultimate Grand Prize by Eliminating 60 Burmese Pythons

The 2025 Florida Python Challenge has crowned Taylor Stanberry as the Ultimate Grand Prize winner. Stanberry eliminated 60 Burmese pythons during the 10-day competition held from July 10-20, earning her the $10,000 grand prize. The event aimed to raise awareness about the invasive species and remove them from the South Florida ecosystem. A total of $25,000 in prize money was distributed among winners in three categories: professional, novice, and military. The competition saw 294 pythons removed, the highest number in any Python Challenge so far.
The challenge started at eight competition locations with 934 registered participants from the U.S. and Canada. Stanberry, along with her husband Rhett, resides in Naples, and Rhett has a Facebook page dedicated to snakes and hunting. The Python Challenge is crucial in controlling the Burmese python population in the Florida Everglades, as they have caused significant harm to the ecosystem by preying on small mammals. The event encourages participants to remove pythons from Commission-managed lands in South Florida.
Burmese pythons have been known to consume prey much larger than previously thought, with one snake observed swallowing a 77-pound white-tailed deer. The challenge requires participants to humanely kill any captured pythons on the spot, as transporting live pythons is prohibited. Despite the challenges in detecting and controlling the python population, efforts like the Florida Python Challenge play a vital role in protecting the Everglades ecosystem from the invasive species.
