Trump's Plan for Ukraine: Negotiating Territory Return with Putin

President Trump has expressed his intention to discuss the return of territory to Ukraine during his upcoming meeting with Russian President Putin. He mentioned that Russia has occupied a significant portion of Ukraine and that he aims to negotiate the return of some of that territory. The meeting in Alaska is expected to be a preliminary discussion to encourage Putin to end the conflict, with the possibility of discussing land exchanges.

Trump referred to the potential for "land-swapping" during the talks, although it remains uncertain which specific territories Russia could potentially relinquish to Ukraine. Notably, Ukraine has never laid claim to any Russian lands. Trump emphasized that he would keep European leaders informed if Putin presents a fair deal during the discussions and mentioned that he would first speak to Ukraine's President Zelensky out of respect before making any decisions.

While Trump acknowledged having a good relationship with Zelensky, he also expressed strong disagreement with some of Zelensky's actions. Trump has previously held Zelensky responsible for the conflict in Ukraine, which began with Russia's invasion of the country in February 2022. The meeting with Putin was announced by Trump on the same day he set a deadline for Russia to agree to a ceasefire or face additional sanctions from the US.

In response to news of the upcoming summit in Alaska, President Zelensky emphasized that any agreements made without involving Ukraine in the discussions would be considered ineffective and referred to as "dead decisions." The outcome of the meeting between Trump and Putin could have significant implications for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, and the involvement of all relevant parties, including Ukraine, will be crucial in reaching a sustainable resolution.
