South Carolina Attorney General Responds to Alex Murdaugh's Appeal in Murder Case

The South Carolina Attorney General's Office has filed a response to Alex Murdaugh's appeal challenging his convictions for the murders of his wife and son. Attorney General Alan Wilson's office submitted a 182-page brief refuting Murdaugh's claims that a county clerk influenced the jury.

This response marks the State's first comprehensive rebuttal to Murdaugh's request for a new trial. Prosecutors argued that the jury's decision was based on overwhelming evidence, not the clerk's comments about Murdaugh's testimony.

The prosecution also stated that Murdaugh waived his right to challenge financial crimes evidence by not appealing the trial court's ruling. Wilson's team had requested additional time to respond due to the case's complexity and extensive evidence.

Dick Harpootlian, Murdaugh's defense attorney, alleged that the clerk's actions compromised the trial's fairness. He claimed that the clerk's influence may have swayed two jurors' votes, potentially affecting the verdict.

Murdaugh was convicted in March 2023 for the murders of his wife and son, along with weapons charges. His defense team has 30 days to respond to the attorney general's brief before oral arguments are scheduled by the state Supreme Court.

Despite maintaining his innocence, Murdaugh is currently serving two consecutive life sentences in state prison. Fox News Digital reached out to Wilson's office for comment but did not receive a response.
