Potential Summit: White House Considers Inviting Zelenskyy to Alaska for Talks with Putin

The White House is contemplating the possibility of inviting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Alaska, where President Donald Trump is set to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin next week, as per a senior U.S. official and three individuals familiar with the internal discussions. The visit is currently under discussion, with hopes that Zelenskyy might attend the meetings in Alaska. However, no final decision has been made yet, and it remains uncertain if Zelenskyy will be present for the meetings. The U.S. official mentioned that it is a possibility and expressed optimism about the potential visit. The White House is currently focused on planning the bilateral meeting requested by President Putin, but remains open to a trilateral summit with both leaders.
The Ukrainian government has not provided any comments on the matter. Trump's announcement of a meeting with Putin in Alaska on August 15 aims to secure a ceasefire in Ukraine. Initially, a meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy was a condition for the Trump-Putin meeting, but Trump later clarified that it was not a precondition. If Zelenskyy does travel to Alaska, it is unclear if he and Putin would have a face-to-face meeting. The recent diplomatic efforts to end the conflict in Ukraine include Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff meeting with Putin in Moscow before the deadline set by the president for Putin to agree to a ceasefire or face new sanctions.
Despite Putin not agreeing to a ceasefire, he proposed a potential agreement to end the war that would allow Russia to retain significant portions of Ukrainian territory. Zelenskyy, on the other hand, stated defiantly that Ukrainians will not surrender their land to occupiers. Trump mentioned the possibility of territory swaps between Russia and Ukraine for mutual benefit. Administration officials are actively working to garner support for a potential ceasefire from the Ukrainian government and European leaders. The ongoing discussions and diplomatic efforts reflect the urgency to find a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.
