Kennedy Center Honors: Changes in Announcement, Ribbon Design, and Event Schedule

The Kennedy Center is making changes to its annual lifetime achievement honorees announcement and the design of the award ribbon, according to sources familiar with the decisions. The announcement of the honorees will now be closer to the event in December, and the ribbon may be redesigned to a simpler version. The Kennedy Center Honors name will remain unchanged, despite concerns of a complete revamp. The ribbon for the lifetime achievement medallion may be redesigned with a black or gold ribbon.

The Honors weekend will undergo a revamp with a more streamlined schedule to replace multiple gatherings at various locations. The events were costly and time-consuming, leading some honorees to skip non-televised events. President Trump's involvement earlier this year led to changes in leadership and triggered some artists to cancel performances and staff members to resign.

The Kennedy Center Honors ceremony is produced by CBS and airs on the network. The development team at the Kennedy Center has been significantly reduced in size, with some departments being eliminated. Despite a collapse in giving by Democratic donors, fundraising efforts have intensified with more corporate sponsors.

Richard Grenell, the Kennedy Center's president, emphasized the importance of keeping and expanding the donor base without making the arts political. President Trump had skipped the Honors shows during his first term after facing criticism from award recipients, breaking the tradition of presidential attendance. In contrast, President Biden attended all four years of his term, including last year's ceremony honoring notable figures in the arts.
