Virginia City Councilman Faces Challenging Recovery After Alleged Murder Attempt

A Virginia city councilman is facing a challenging recovery after being set on fire in an alleged murder attempt. Lee Vogler, a Danville City Council member and director of marketing at Showcase Magazine, is currently receiving treatment at the UNC Burn Clinic in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Vogler's family is by his side as he undergoes multiple surgeries and faces a long and uncertain road to recovery.
The incident occurred when Shotsie Michael Buck Hayes, 29, forced his way into the Showcase Magazine office building, poured gasoline on Vogler, and set him on fire. Vogler sustained severe burns covering approximately 60% of his body, primarily on his torso. Despite the traumatic attack, Vogler was able to identify Hayes, leading to a swift arrest by authorities.
Hayes confessed to intending for Vogler to die in the fire, according to court records. Vogler's wife, Blair, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support and donations received to assist with Vogler's medical expenses. The community's outpouring of love and generosity has provided strength to the family during this difficult time.
The attack was reportedly a result of a personal matter between Vogler and Hayes, unrelated to Vogler's political affiliations or position on the Danville City Council. Hayes faces charges of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated malicious wounding and is currently held in the Danville City Jail without bond. The incident has shocked the community and raised concerns about the safety of public officials in the area.
