Zohran Mamdani Leads NYC Mayoral Race with Strong Support Across Demographic Groups

Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani is currently leading the race for the New York City mayoral election by a significant margin, according to a recent poll conducted by Zenith Research and Public Progress Solutions. The poll, which surveyed 1,453 New York City residents from July 16 to July 24, showed Mamdani with 50% of the vote, regardless of his opponents, with a margin of error of 2.9% for registered voters and 3.9% for likely 2025 mayoral election voters.

In the poll, Mamdani's closest competitor was former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who received 22% support, followed by conservative activist Curtis Sliwa with 13% support. Mayor Eric Adams garnered 7% support, and former federal prosecutor Jim Walden received 1% support. The remaining 6% of respondents were undecided or chose the "others/I don't know" option.

Mamdani's support remained consistently above 50% in the poll and even increased in scenarios with fewer candidates. For instance, in a hypothetical four-way race without Cuomo, Mamdani's support rose to 55%, and without Adams, it rose to 51%. The majority of respondents (58%) indicated they would consider voting for Mamdani in the upcoming election.

The poll also revealed that a significant portion of respondents were dissatisfied with the direction of the city, with 70% expressing dissatisfaction. The top concerns for respondents included housing costs, the prices of groceries and household items, utilities, and crime and public safety.

Amit Singh Bagga, founder of Public Progress Solutions, highlighted the diversity of support for Mamdani, noting that various demographic groups, including Black union households, young Jews, South Asians, East Asians, and Latinos, are backing Mamdani's candidacy. Bagga emphasized that Mamdani's campaign represents the future of the Democratic Party and urged attention to the poll results as a blueprint for party evolution.

The poll results indicate a strong lead for Zohran Mamdani in the New York City mayoral race, with significant support across various demographic groups and a clear message of dissatisfaction with the current state of the city. As the election approaches, Mamdani's campaign continues to gain momentum, positioning him as a frontrunner in the race for mayor.
